A new multiplicative decomposition for the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty indices

چکیده
This paper explores a unified framework for the study of changes in poverty over time as measured by the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty indices. First we identify a multiplicative decomposition for the indices of this family as a product of the three components which should be involved in every poverty index: the incidence, the intensity and the inequality in the distribution of the income of the poor. Then we establish a connection between this procedure and the methodology developed by Nanak Kakwani (2000) to decompose the change in poverty into the growth and inequality effects. Finally, taking the Spanish Household Budget Surveys (SHB) for 1973/74, 1980/81 and 1990/91 as a basis we show the advantages and possibilities of this framework in regard to completing and detailing information in studies of poverty over time.

A Re-scaled Version of the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke Poverty Indices based on an Association with the Minkowski Distance Function
This note advances a family of poverty measures, Πα, which are derived as simple, normalized Minkowski distance functions. The Πα indices turn out to be the αth roots of the corresponding Foster, Greer and Thorbecke Pα indices. The re-calibration of Pα in terms of Πα could have certain possible advantages, which are reviewed in the note. While the Πα indices are not decomposable in the ordinari...
متن کاملDecomposing the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke Index of Vulnerability to Poverty
This paper applies the decomposition of the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty index to the measurement of the individual vulnerability to poverty. I highlight that poverty risk can be expressed as a function of expected incidence, expected intensity and expected downward variability. An empirical illustration is provided using the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and the Survey on Household I...

Nigeria represents one of the paradoxes of development in which case the nation is rich but her people are poor. This study examines the rate of poverty among rural households in South western, Nigeria. A random multistage sampling was employed for the study. Ekiti and Osun states were randomly selected from the six states in South-western Nigeria. This was followed by random selection of two L...

This paper examines the relationship between growth and poverty in Iran during the first five-year plan. In other words, effort has been made to show whether economic growth in Iran helped poor people or not. For this purpose the concept of pro poor growth has been analyzed with application to the economy of Iran, both in urban and rural areas and in the country as a whole. We use an indicator ...
متن کاملA CLASS OF CHRONIC POVERTY MEASURES by
This paper presents a new family of chronic poverty measures based on the P α poverty measures of Foster, Greer, and Thorbecke (1984). The chronically poor are identified using two cutoffs: a standard poverty line, which identifies the time periods during which a person is poor; and a duration cutoff, which is the minimum percentage of time a person must be in poverty in order to be chronically ...
